In 1954, Roger Bannister ran the first 4 minute mile and then collapsed across the line assuming he was dead. You see, it was understood at the time that running a 4 minute mile would kill you – that it was virtually impossible. Bannister achieved an incredible feat but what has always been most interesting to me is what occurred after he achieved it.
After Bannister shattered what was thought possible, several others immediately followed also breaking the 4 minute mile. Today, the mile record has been lowered by almost 17 seconds. Bannister changed the realm of possibility in the minds of all runners.
What is your 4 minute mile? What is that thing that you want to achieve but are not sure is possible? Each of us has physical limits but at the top level, the mind is what prevents us from achieving our very best. It is time to start believing your 4 minute mile is possible.
